NMEAC Environmentalist of the Year

NMEAC is the only organization in the region to recognize the environmental work and advocacy of so many groups and individuals across our region. We rely on you to nominate those most deserving of these awards.

Our 30th Annual Environmentalist of the Year Awards & Celebration will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018, at the Dennos Museum and Milliken Auditorium.

Doors will open at 5:30 PM with food provided by Taproot. The event will conclude at 9:00 PM. This year's guest speaker will be Holly Bird from the Grand Traverse Band of Chippewa & Ottawa Indians. Music will be provided by Brotha James as part of the program. Nominations for this year's awards will be open January 1 through March 31, 2018, in the following categories:

CATEGORIES

Agriculture

  • All things local, organic, sustainable, agriculture.

Business

  • Takes voluntary measures to ensure their business has the least possible impact on the environment.
  • Acts as a model of ecological sensitivity for peers and employees.

Educator

  • Integrates environmental ethics into the curriculum and daily experience of students.
  • Instills in students a healthy respect for the natural world of which we all are a part.
  • Helps students understand the long-range impacts of their lifestyle decisions on ecosystems.

General

  • Provides outstanding leadership in addressing a major environmental issue in the region.
  • Serves as a model of ecological sensitivity for others in the region to follow in daily life and work.

Grass Roots Group

  • Empowers citizens to have an effective voice in addressing important environmental issues.
  • Is effective in bringing about change that will protect or improve the environment.

Journalism & Communications

  • Helps the public develop a deeper understanding of the environmental issues facing the region.
  • Takes the initiative in investigative reporting of environmental issues.

Professional

  • Provides outstanding leadership in addressing a major environmental issue in the region.
  • Serves as a model of ecological sensitivity for others in the region to follow in daily life and work.

Public Service or Public Office

  • Takes the lead in constructing proactive legislation or politics that protect or enhance the environment.
  • Displays integrity and impartiality in dealing with potentially controversial issues relating to the environment.

Student

  • Shows leadership in addressing environmental issues in school and/or community.
  • Shows creativity and initiative in expanding own and others’ understanding of environmental concerns.
  • Acts as a model of ecological sensitivity for peers, teachers, and administrators.

Volunteer

  • Provides outstanding leadership in addressing a major environmental issue in the region.
  • Serves as a model of ecological sensitivity for others in the region to follow in daily life and work.
