Clean Water Action:
Michigan - Our Water, Our Health, Our Future
by Cyndi Roper
Dear Lynn,
When candidates running for President talk about taking our Great Lakes waters so thirsty desert cities like Las Vegas can keep growing, it's time we made sure Michigan doesn't turn on the tap with weak laws. Right now, some Michigan politicians are proposing large quantities of Michigan's rivers and streams be made available to send to places like Las Vegas, Arizona or even China. Maybe these politicians don't realize that our streams, lakes and aquifers - our drinking water sources - are all connected in the Great Lakes system. Or maybe they care more about corporate lobbyists who want to profit from selling the Great Lakes.
We need your voice to protect our lakes.
Tell Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop to stand-up to the international corporate lobbyists that want to take our water.
Right now, large international corporations are writing the legislation they need to hook up pipelines to the Great Lakes, and sell our water outside the Great Lakes region. It could start with our rivers, streams and aquifers, but will our politicians be able to turn off the tap when the Southwest demands a pipeline?
As leader of the Senate, Senator Bishop can put an end to the sucking sound created by thirsty Southwestern states looking for our water. If our politicians say yes to selling off large quantities of our rivers now, how do we trust them to say no to the pipeline down the road?
Tell Bishop to say no to putting our rivers and streams up for sale.
Clean Water Action opposes Senate Bills 858 and 860 sponsored by Senators Patty Birkholz and Gerald VanWoerkom because selling off huge parts of our Great Lakes system like the cold, clear Jordan River near Charlevoix would be the same as selling off a part of the Grand Canyon. Only greedy corporate lobbyists would write such legislation.
There is a better way.
The Michigan House of Representatives has introduced legislation that truly protects the Great Lakes. Unlike bills proposed in the Senate, the House bills ensure that Michigan citizens-boaters, local industry and businesses, tourism, fishing, and drinking water sources-are protected from outside water takers.
Senator Bishop needs to hear from you.
Our Great Lakes are too precious to sell-off. We deserve better protections than those written by international corporations whose only interest is to make a buck.
Sincerely,
Cyndi Roper
Great Lakes Policy Director
P.S. Taking action today to save our Great Lakes will help ensure their sustainability for future generations.
