Sally Van Vleck Reflects on NMEAC's Origin

So beautifully stated, Sally! NMEAC began with us four young mothers—drinking coffee and watching toddlers while sharing deep concerns over Big Rock’s proposal to store spent nuclear fuel rods in Charlevoix. We did our best, along with others, taking a stand against this issue, while creatively raising funds. Soon after we realized the glaring need to incorporate, and NMEAC was formed thanks to Jim Olson’s great guidance. I am proud to have been part of its inception with you, Char Goral and Judy McClellan! Drilling in the Sand Lakes Quiet was another issue I vividly recall, as well as promoting recycling (loved our play we performed for TC students— “Defeat of the Dump Monster”!) and encouraging bike paths in Traverse City (The Great Grand Traverse Bike In—organized by Mary Van Valin and held along West Bay!)). Most of all, Sally, from the beginning you were the foundation of NMEAC, dedicating over half of your life to its success. You have touched so many lives and encouraged deeper respect for our precious earth. Not only have you raised awareness for environmental issues through education and outreach, but common ground results in honoring the earth and our fellow humans. What greater gift could you bring to all of us in healing divisiveness? With love, Martha
